AlphaVSS 1.1.4000.2 and 1.2.4000.2 released

Due to a bug introduced in Visual Studio 2010 SP1 the previous releases of AlphaVSS had a pretty serious bug in that all the platform-specific x86 assemblies were signed with the wrong key-file. The 1.1.4000.2 and 1.2.4000.2 releases fixes this problem. The workaround that has to be applied to your environment if you are building the sources yourself is outlined at

  1. No, unfortunately I can’t help you there. I’ve never worked with restore points myself, so I wouldn’t have a clue.

    Sorry. 🙁

  2. Hello.

I’ve got a question concerning the AlphaVSS library. Is their any way to contact you directly?

    Thank you.

      1. No worries. My question is more to do with VSS itself… in a nutshell, I’ve been using a program that takes advantage of your library ( It allows you to directly mount a restore point and browse it in a standard Explorer window and copy files out of it.

I realise that this question isn’t spacific to the library, but was wondering if you could help. When mounting certain restore points, VSS gives me the following error.

        Location Not Available

        C:\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy1 is not accessible.

        Incorrect function.

The message is always the same, but changes depending on the number of the restore point that I try to mount (basically, it’s random and doesn’t seem to depend on when the restore point was created).

Have you ever seen this error before, or do you have any ideas as to what makes the point unable to mount?
